Missouri Senate lingers on redistricting

April 13th, 2011 in News

The House-passed Congressional Redistricting plan ran into trouble in the Missouri Senate on Tuesday morning and, after nearly two hours of debate, was set aside for another time without ever getting a vote.

Nevertheless, Senate floor leader Tom Dempsey, R-St. Charles, expects to resume the debate on the House version this afternoon - with the possibility of proposed amendments.

"We'll strictly be working on the House bill," Dempsey told reporters. "I know people continue to talk about the maps."

Questions Tuesday focused on three main issues: Adding Lafayette, Ray and Saline counties to the Kansas City-based 5th Congressional District; splitting Polk County in southwest Missouri between two districts; and the effects of expanding the Cape Girardeau-based 8th District into Jefferson County.
