Authorities to drop charge against ex-KC officer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A grand jury in Clay County has decided not to indict a former Kansas City police officer on a charge of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old but did indict him on a charge of providing the teen alcohol.

The Kansas City Star reported that after the grand jury's decision Friday, Clay County authorities plan to drop the deviate sexual assault charge against 53-year-old James R. Silke.

Authorities had alleged he made unwanted advances on one of his son's friends. The 19-year-old told investigators Silke poured him shots of rum before inviting him into a hot tub.

Silke surrendered to authorities and was released after posting a $5,000 bond.

He was a police officer when the accusations were made. Since then, he has left the department.
