California judge blocks sex offender law

November 5th, 2010 in News

A judge in California temporarily blocked the enforcement of a legal restriction on how close sex offenders can live to parks and schools in Los Angeles County.

Superior Court Judge Peter Espinoza's ruling says sex offense parolees are forced to become homeless or go to prison because the law gives them few housing options.

His ruling issued Monday halts enforcement of residency requirements in the measure known as Jessica's Law, which forbids sex offenders from residing within 2,000 feet of a public or private school, or a park where children gather.

Challenges regarding the housing restrictions were expected elsewhere in the state.
