Inmates shoots, kills self near entrance to Missouri jail

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- Authorities say an inmate has shot and killed himself in Springfield while he was being transported.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that it happened Thursday morning after a civilian transport company vehicle stopped at the entrance of the Greene County Jail to drop off another inmate. Greene County Jail. Sheriff Jim Arnott says that while the vehicle was stopped, the suicidal inmate was allowed out of the vehicle. He then shot himself in the head with a gun he obtained from inside the vehicle.

The inmate wasn't immediately identified. Authorities said only that he wasn't being held at the Greene County Jail. The transport vehicle in which he was riding was carrying multiple inmates to jail facilities. Arnott says he doesn't have the name of the transport company.
