Theft charge dismissed against former St. Louis County officer

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) - Prosecutors have dropped a felony theft charge against a former St. Louis County police lieutenant.

Norman R. Campbell had been accused of working a private security job while on police duty. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that St. Louis County prosecutors have not said why the charge was dropped.

Campbell worked for the county police department for about 20 years. He was charged with stealing in March 2015 and suspended without pay. A department spokesman says Campbell was fired in January 2016.

He was accused of working security for the Dirt Cheap Co. from Jan. 10, 2014, to Feb. 5, 2014. The value of the alleged theft was estimated at just under $6,000.

Campbell's lawyer Neil Bruntrager has characterized the investigation as a "misunderstanding."
