MILAN, Mo. (AP) -- The federal government is providing $20 million more for construction of 2,352-acre reservoir in north-central Missouri.
The Natural Resources Conservation Service announced Tuesday that it will provide the money for construction of a lake near Milan.
State Conservationist J.R. Flores says the East Locust Creek Reservoir will provide water for Adair, Chariton, Grundy, Linn, Livingston, Macon, Mercer, Putnam, Schuyler and Sullivan counties. it also will reduce flooding, store sediment and provide recreation.
The NRCS has already provided $19 million for the project and Flores said Congress could provide another $20 million later in the construction process.
Local and state funding will provide the rest of the project's $110 million total cost.
Dam construction will begin next fall and the reservoir is expected to be fully filled in late 2021.
