Two State Technical College of Missouri students from Linn are the recipients of a new scholarship being offered by the local American Legion.

The Fallen Riders Scholarships are in honor of the American Legion Riders program.

The recipients are Christopher S. Perry and James B. Hassell.

"We wanted to do something after the sudden death of one of our riders, Mike Riggs," said Dan Levasseur, director of the local American Legion Riders. "His wife, Debbie, continues to serve in the group, and we decided to get the scholarship started."

Riggs served in the military for more than 36 years.

Another rider being remembered is Bill Findley, who served in the military for more than 26 years.

Requirements for the scholarships include the students be working toward degrees or qualifications that will certify to do motorcycle repairs. They also must have family members who are military veterans.

The scholarships are for $1,000 each.

"They can be used any way they want," Levasseur said. "We got so much support we were able to offer two, and we want to increase the number as time goes on. This is just one of many things we do for veterans and our community."
