A Jefferson City man is charged with breaking into The Salvation Army Thrift Store on Michigan Street early Sunday morning.

Demetrius Jones, 31, is charged with second-degree burglary, attempted stealing and second-degree property damage.

The incident occurred at 3:47 a.m., when the store's burglary alarm went off, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement.

Officers arrived to reportedly find the front main door of the business had been shattered and a large rock sitting on the ground just inside the door. Inside, they found Jones hiding in a bathroom.

Authorities searched Jones and allegedly found him to be in possession of cash. Later they found the drawer on the store's cash register had been pulled out and all the money taken out.

An employee of the store arrived and told authorities how much was to have been inside the cash register at the time the burglary occurred. Officers said the amount Jones was found to be in possession of matched the amount that was to have been in the cash register.

During an interview, Jones allegedly admitted to taking the money.
