Jefferson City firefighters battled a blaze Monday, March 25, 2019, that caused heavy damage to the building housing Scuba Adventure at 901 Jefferson St.

Jefferson City firefighters responded around 7 a.m. today to a commercial building at 901 Jefferson St. after a caller reported seeing smoke coming from the roof line.

The first arriving unit also observed smoke in the three-story building which houses Scuba Adventure on its first floor and living quarters on the second and third floors.

Crews discovered a large hole where fire had burned through the floor of the first story of the building. Firefighters then made their way to the basement where the bulk of the fire appeared to have originated and was quickly extinguished.

The incident was reported to be under control shortly before 8 a.m., but crews remained on the scene for some time to extinguish hot spots.

Investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing with the assistance of city police and the Missouri Division of Fire Safety.

Police blocked off adjacent streets as 18 firefighters and two Cole County Emergency Medical Service responders were on the scene.
