Jefferson City Police Department seeks applicants for citizens' academy

Citizens of the Jefferson City community who are interested in learning more about the operations of the Jefferson City Police Department may want to apply to the Citizens Police Academy, which is now taking applications.

The CPA is an 11-week program sponsored by JCPD in an effort to increase understanding and awareness through interaction, education and training, according to a department news release.

The goal of the CPA is to create and develop well-informed residents by teaching about the inner workings of a police department and how officers enforce laws.

The curriculum includes an introduction to JCPD command staff, JCPD history, a tour of the facilities, patrol activities and demonstrations, officer selection and training, community action team, SWAT/tactical operations, drug enforcement, criminal investigation/crime scene processing, traffic enforcement/DWI/accident investigation, internal affairs, support services/communications/records management, use of force/defensive tactics/firearms, and more.

Applicants must be 18 years or older, a Cole County resident, and able to pass the application process and a background check. The class size is limited to 24.

Classes will be 6-9 p.m. Thursdays from Sept. 19 to Dec. 5 at the Jefferson City Police Department, 401 Monroe St.

Applications can be obtained by visiting the department lobby receptionist or found on the Jefferson City website, jeffcitymo.org, or the Jefferson City Police Department Facebook page. Applications should be turned in as soon as possible.
