Habitat for Humanity is now accepting homeowner applications for Jefferson City homes.

The nonprofit will host a community meeting this month at 1420 Creek Trail Drive to discuss the application process and Habitat home ownership. The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 15.

Applications will be distributed at the meetings; the application deadline is 4 p.m. Jan. 25.

Interested individuals must call the Habitat for Humanity office at 573-635-8439 to reserve a spot at the meeting. Those who can't attend the community event but are still interested can stop by Habitat for Humanity's office, call the office to have one mailed or download it from rivercityhabitat.org.

So far, 60 people have shown interest in the Habitat for Humanity homes, River City Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Susan Cook-Williams told the News Tribune. The nonprofit will select three homeowners from this group to receive the homes, she added.

Habitat for Humanity selects families based on their degree of need of affordable housing, ability to pay a home mortgage and willingness to partner with the nonprofit, according to the news release. Applicants must also be United States citizens or permanent legal residents.

"Habitat's home ownership program empowers families to build a better life for themselves through the stability and security of owning their own home," Cook-Williams said in a Friday news release. "Habitat homes are not given away, but rather they are sold to qualified families who put in hundreds of hours of sweat equity."
