LU Dance Troupe Director Theressa Ferguson leads her group through rehearsals for their upcoming annual dance recital April 6-8.

When talking about Lincoln University Dance Troupe, director Theressa Ferguson is reminded of a quote from a young American poet Mattie Stepanek: "Unity is strength. When there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved."

These words particularly speak to the composition and choreography of the LU Dance Troupe's 41st annual recital, "XLI," scheduled April 6-8 at Richardson Auditorium.

"This year is very unique and very exciting because the company alumni have solely choreographed this year's concert," Ferguson said.

Seven alumni - Markesha Howlett, Shauquire Jones, Victoria Johnson, Adrienne Collins, Ruthlin Hutault and Tierra Williams - have returned to choreograph the recital which includes gospel, hip-hop, spiritual, lyrical, ballet and modern dances. Ferguson and guest choreographers Keena Ferguson-Frazier and Alexis Collins also have assisted in creating an intriguing, polished show, which is free and open to the public.

"We have a variety of music in our show, and everybody is going to hear a song they love or a song they never heard before but love it," Ferguson said. "With the music, dance and choreography, the audience becomes engaged and truly becomes part of the performance."

Ferguson was also so touched and in awe of her returning LU Dance Troupe alumni as they rehearsed with her current group of dancers and will perform in various routines throughout the recital.

"Last Saturday, a lot of (the alumni) were in the studio. It was awesome to have them back in this space. They all have such a passion for dance and a love for this troupe. I've seen the older faces reflecting on their times here and coming together for the beauty of dance. It truly warms my heart."

Everyone is invited to attend the LU Dance Troupe's "XLI" dance recital at 8:15 p.m. April 6, 2:15 p.m. April 7 and April 8 at Richardson Auditorium.
