Sheriff's Department reports string of thefts in Wardsville area

Cole County Sheriff's Department deputies are looking into another round of thefts from unlocked vehicles and homes - this time in the Wardsville/Taos area.

Sheriff John Wheeler said his department has not been called to any break-ins.

While he didn't offer a specific number of how many thefts had occurred, Wheeler said the department has been taking reports for about a week.

Weapons, jewelry and other valuables have been taken in these recent theft cases.

"These have been crimes of opportunity," Wheeler said. "We can't stress enough to residents to please lock their doors. If these folks find it easy to access something, then they'll keep coming back."

Wheeler said detectives are continuing to investigate leads and they would appreciate any help that the public can give them.

"These come in spurts," he said. "It will settle down for a while and then start back up again. People keep their guard up for a while and then let it down again, and that's when crimes like these occur."

Anyone with information that could help the investigation should call the Sheriff's Department at 573-634-9160.
