Teen detained in connection with fatal shooting

A 16-year-old Jefferson City boy has been detained in connection with a shooting Wednesday night that left one Jefferson City man dead and another with serious injuries.

Police said Friday they were unsure how long it would be before the teenager could go through certification as an adult for the crime.

Meanwhile, authorities did identify the man who was killed in that shooting as Justin Kammerich, 33. The other man injured, a 20-year-old Jefferson City resident, remains at University Hospital in Columbia, recovering from his wounds. Authorities are not releasing his name for his safety.

The shooting occurred just after 11 p.m. Wednesday in the area of the 800 block of Broadway. Responding officers found the two men near the parking lot of an apartment complex along West Atchison Street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Witnesses told investigators the two were standing and talking to each other when they were shot by an unknown assailant who fled the area on foot after the shooting.

Kammerich succumbed to his injuries early Thursday morning.

In this week's other murder case, Police Department Spokesman Lt. David Williams said they have yet to determine a motive or suspects in the Tuesday night killing of D'Angelo Bratton-Bland, the 23-year-old president of Lincoln University's Student Government Association, who died after being shot in the 200 block of Dawson Street.

Bratton-Bland was found by officers in a car that was seen speeding from the area after officers were called to go there for a report of shots fired. Those in the car were taking him to get treatment for a gunshot wound. He eventually died at University Hospital in Columbia.

Williams said they continue to believe Bratton-Bland did nothing to contribute to his fatal shooting. While evidence has been collected and people who were on the scene that night have been interviewed, Williams said none of that has led to anything that could help police make an arrest.

Anyone with information on either Tuesday's or Wednesday's fatal shootings is urged to call the police department at 634-6400 or anonymously through the CrimeStoppers Tips Line at 659-TIPS.
