One man was killed and another was seriously wounded after both were shot Wednesday night in Jefferson City.

Authorities said, just after 11 p.m., the 911 center received calls of shots fired in the area of the 800 block of Broadway Street. Responding officers found two men near the parking lot of an apartment complex along West Atchison Street suffering from gunshot wounds.

Witnesses told investigators that the two were standing and talking to each other when they were shot by an unknown assailant.

Both men were transported to a local hospital for treatment. One of the men, a 33 year-old Jefferson City resident, succumbed to his injuries early Thursday morning while the other man, a 20 year-old Jefferson City resident, was taken from Capital Region Medical Center to University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia for treatment. Police did not release names of the victims pending notification of families.

Authorities searched areas along Broadway Street and Hess Way, near the apartments, for evidence that could help with the investigation. As of Thursday morning, investigators were following several leads, but no arrests had been made.

Police Department Spokesman Lt. David Williams said there was no description available of the suspect in the shooting. They do know he fled the area on foot after the shooting.

Williams also said this incident was not related to a shooting Tuesday night in the 200 block of Dawson Street which left a Lincoln University student dead.
