Westphalia ATV run set for Sunday

With a casual trail running over back roads and cutting through the countryside, the Westphalia Lions Club ATV Run has been rescheduled to 9 a.m. Sunday after its original March date was blocked by rain.

The run will begin and end at the Westphalia Lions Club, 2073 U.S. 63, and features a new trail covering ground north and east of Westphalia. Registration will open at 9 a.m., and the run will start at 10:30 a.m.

Riders can register at the event for $10 per vehicle and $5 per person, so two people on one ATV would cost $20. ATVs and UTVs are the only vehicles allowed but do not need to be licensed. Drivers must have a driver's license. Helmets or other safety apparel is not required, but riders go at their own risk and must sign a waiver.

Hot food will be available at the end of the run, and there will also be a sandwich break during the event.

Chris Heckman, a member of the Westphalia Lions Club, said prices for food at the end of the run have not been not set yet, but the offerings will include hot dogs, brats and hamburgers.

The Lions Club has gained permission to run through several private properties and should make for a relaxed ride, Heckman said. There may be a few creeks to cross, he added, but the group will stick together and follow the trail at an easy pace.

Money raised by the run goes to the Lions Club and can add up quickly, with around 170 people coming out last year for the first event, Heckman said.
