The Cole County R-5 School District in Eugene will begin offering before- and after-school care for students in pre-K through sixth grade during the 2018-19 school year.
Eugene Elementary School Principal Teresa Messersmith said the local YMCA offered a similar program a few years back, but the school decided to put a program together after a recent parent survey indicated community interest - approximately 25 families interested in before-school care and 70 interested in after-school care.
Messersmith said students are eligible to enroll in before- and after-school care.
The school will probably have different teachers work the program on a rotational schedule, she said.
The before-school care is 6:45-7:45 a.m. at a cost for families of $2 per child per day, and after-school care is 3:45-5:45 p.m for $5 per child per day. The location for both programs is the elementary building at 14803 Missouri 17.
Messersmith said homework help will be available during the program, along with a snack and outside or inside recess time depending on the weather and season.
"Each day, we would try to offer some kind of fine arts activity," she added. One night a week will be dedicated to a subject like music, art, computers or physical education.
Enrollment will be available at the open house scheduled 6-7 p.m. Tuesday.
