Fulton voters rejected a proposed use tax at the polls Tuesday.

Of 740 votes cast, 422 (56 percent) voted "no" on the use tax question, while 318 (42 percent) voted "yes," according to unofficial results posted Tuesday on the county clerk's website.

Official results will follow after the results are certified by the Callaway County clerk.

The use tax would have added a 2.5 percent tax to purchases made out-of-state by Fulton residents. Missouri and Callaway County already have use taxes in place, at 4.225 percent and 1 percent, respectively. Taxpayers would have been required to self-report purchases qualifying for the use tax.

Fulton City Council results

The Fulton City Council's Ward 3 has a new representative after John Braun easily won the seat formerly held by Beverly Gray.

"I'm really happy to be able to support the third ward," Braun said Tuesday evening.

Braun received 137 of 205 votes cast in the race, or 67 percent. His opponent, Lindsey Pace-Snook, took 63 votes.

He said his first order of business will be getting to know his fellow city council members. He also plans to take a close look at the proposed Section 8 housing project that might be built in his ward.

Braun has lived in Fulton since 2006 with his wife and three children. Formerly, he acted as director of parks and recreation for Mackinaw, Illinois. Braun has said his years of management experience qualifies him for a city council position.

Other Fulton City Council seats were filled in unopposed races, including Ballard Simmons in Ward 1, Mary Rehklau in Ward 2 and Steve Moore in Ward 4.
