DAR turns to cycling to help Wounded Warrior Project

The Jane Randolph Jefferson chapter of the Missouri Daughters of the American Revolution invites the community to take part in the second statewide Wheeling for Healing Fundraiser this Saturday.

Starting at 8 a.m., bicyclists across the state will ride the Katy Trail in support of veterans, raising funds for those who benefit from services provided by the Wounded Warrior Project.

The Wounded Warrior Project serves veterans and service members who incurred a physical or mental injury, illness or wound, co-incident to their military service on or after Sept. 11, 2001, and their families. As of Wednesday, the WWP has served 106,615 veterans and 25,232 family members offering a variety of short- and long-term support programs, according to the organization's website.

For example, a veteran may qualify for a free Combat Stress Recovery Program or Physical Health and Wellness program, offering opportunities to live an active lifestyle.

Riders in Jefferson City can meet at the North Jefferson trailhead, where they can join Mayor Carrie Tergin and DAR members in their efforts to continue raising awareness about the cause.

"It's a fun way for all to come out and support our veterans," said Vivian Kaysen, chapter regent of the Jane Randolph Jefferson Chapter.

Since the event is a collaboration among all state Missouri DAR chapters, members from different DAR chapters will be there cheering on the riders at every depot on the Katy Trail, Kaysen said.

A few community sponsors, such as Car Fax, Whaley's, Walmart, Sam's Club and Joe Machens, will have a team of riders present that day.
