Historic Preservation Commission approves demolition

The Jefferson City Historic Preservation Commission approved the demolition of a Mississippi Street property at Tuesday's meeting.

Property owners Kenneth and Melissa Wampler requested the residential building at 1828 Mississippi St. be demolished. According to the application, there were issues with the property's foundation and the three additions to the building were not constructed properly.

The property was built in 1940, according to the staff report. Jefferson City Neighborhood Service Coordinator Jayme Abbott said it appears the property is vacant.

It was not individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is not a local landmark or located in a local historic district. City staff stated the historical integrity of the neighborhood would not be impacted and recommended the commission approve the application.

The Wamplers plan to build a pre-fabricated house in that location, according to the application.

Abbott said the commission reviews demolition requests of buildings more than 50 years old.
