Two full years after construction began at the Fulton State Hospital, the project is still on track for its late 2018 completion date.

"The project is progressing on time and on budget," a representative of the Missouri Office of Administration's Facilities Division said.

The $211 million update to facilities at the hospital was initially approved by the Legislature in 2014, with construction beginning in May 2015. The mental health facility holds several hundred patients, including sex offenders and other potentially violent individuals.

"In the old facility, the architecture doesn't support proper therapy and also client and staff safety," project manager Drew Henrickson said in December.

By June 2016, the first major phase of construction - the 65,000-square-foot, $25 million Energy Control Center - had been completed. It houses the communication center, materials management and computer information.

The old power plant was demolished in February.

Next up is the new intermediate/maximum security facility.

"We are approximately halfway through the estimated 30-month timeline," the OA representative said. "Significant progress has been made, and we are very pleased with the work we have seen from our state employees and contractors thus far."

Patients, who are currently being housed in existing facilities, will move in sometime in spring 2019.

Henrickson previously said many security features and systems must be tested by a commissioned authority before patients can move in.

"At this time, our contractors have not encountered any significant roadblocks with their progress," the Facilities Division representative said.
