The Republican Party's 50th District legislative committee has selected Sara Walsh as its candidate for the Missouri House's newly vacated 50th District seat.

Walsh, currently serving as Republican state committeewoman for Missouri's 19th Senate District, was chosen Saturday at a meeting of the 50th District legislative committee, held in Ashland.

The seat she is seeking was held by Caleb Jones. Jones, R-Columbia, a native of California, Missouri, was re-elected to the seat in November with no opposition. After his appointment as Gov. Eric Greitens' deputy chief of staff, Jones resigned. Before he left office, Gov. Jay Nixon set a special election for Aug. 8 to fill the seat.

"I am honored to have the opportunity to represent the good citizens of the 50th District in the Missouri General Assembly," Walsh said. "My goal is to build on the accomplishments of state Rep. Caleb Jones by fighting for the conservative values that are the hallmark of the hard-working people of this district.

"I intend to be a full-time representative," she said. "I have a passion for people and a desire to serve. I enthusiastically look forward to working together with the citizens of our district as we continue to build momentum to victory in August."

The district encompasses parts of Boone, Cole, Cooper and Moniteau counties.

Walsh, 37, resides in Ashland with her husband, Steve. She earned a bachelor's degree from Columbia College and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Missouri's Truman School of Public Affairs.

She will face Democrat Michela Skelton, an attorney, in the Aug. 8 election.
