Missouri American Water officials advised residents and community members earlier this month to expect work around the water treatment plant on West High Street to continue for some time as they make improvements to the plant.

Starting Tuesday and continuing today, two lime silos are being delivered to the plant, along with another load of reinforcing steel for a new pre-sedimentation basin.

Some parts of the street will be blocked off to allow workers to take equipment to the work site.

The upgrades involve providing redundancy for existing basins, increasing plant capacity, and installing a new lime storage and feed system to replace existing equipment. The goal is to design and build these upgrades to allow for increased plant capacity in the future in case customer demand increases.

Much of the improvements deals with pre-sedimentation, the process by which heavier particles fall out of the water and collect at the bottom.

The Jefferson City plant treats 6.5 million gallons water per day from the Missouri River, serving 11,000 customers. The majority of the plant's facilities was installed in 1963.

While extensive maintenance and improvements have occurred over the years, company officials said, the plant is due for significant improvements to existing facilities as it lacks redundancy of key treatment units.

The upgrade work is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. There will be some work in early 2018 to remove the old lime system once the new system is proven to be operating well.
