Jefferson City woman arrested after fatal Boone County fire

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Authorities said a man and a woman have died in a fire Thursday morning at a Central Missouri apartment complex.

A Jefferson City woman was arrested at the scene of the fire.

Boone County Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Gale Blomenkamp said crews were dispatched around 5:30 a.m. Thursday to the blaze at the complex north of Columbia and around Prathersville.

According to the Boone County Sheriff's Department, Ashley A. Jones, 28, was taken into custody after being combative with a sheriff's deputy investigating the fire. Jones was in the first-floor apartment where the blaze was believed to have originated.

Blomenkamp said the Missouri state fire marshal said the fire originated from a candle on a TV stand in the apartment where Jones was staying.

Fire crews found the victims' bodies in a bathroom in an apartment directly above that unit.

Authorities said Jones is facing no other charges related to the fire.

The victims were identified as Willie E. Wright, 45, and Lauren K. Ballew, 30, both of Columbia.

The fire was brought under control in less than 30 minutes. The fire damaged six apartment units, causing at least $250,000 in damages.

No one else was hurt.
