2 more homes set for demolition for Helias complex

Two more properties were approved for demolition for the Helias High School athletic complex.

The properties -1200 Myrtle Street and 1414 Swifts Highway - were reviewed by the Jefferson City Historic Preservation Commission on Tuesday because both properties are more than 50 years old. With no discussion and few questions, the commission unanimously approved the applications. There was disagreement on whether the demolition of those properties would have an adverse effect and whether either were historically significant.

One ranch-style home on the same block, 1412 Swifts Highway, was originally on the commission's agenda for review before demolition but was removed because the proper documents weren't ready in time for its Tuesday meeting.

Ed Twehouse, of Twehouse Excavation Co. LLC, told the commission they would like to demolish the building soon because it will be in the way of construction before its October meeting. The commission plans to review the application during their subcommittee meeting on Sept. 27.

A home at 1106 Myrtle St. was approved for demolition in August during a special meeting held just to review that demolition application.

All the houses are situated on the end of the athletic complex near the tennis courts and track and field area. They were purchased by Helias with the intent to use the land as part of the complex, according to the documents provided to the commission.

The entire complex is estimated for completion in summer 2017. It will offer two synthetic turf fields for football and soccer, track and field venues, eight tennis courts, grandstands, locker rooms and press facilities.
