Joe Kuensting, a retiree from the Missouri Department of Mental Health (DMH), said his combination of knowledge, compassion and dedication make him the right person to take over the Cole County Public Administrator's Office. He is running as a Republican.

He is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Sons of the American Legion, Host Lions Club and United Sportsmen's Club, and he is an honorary member of the National Association of Reimbursement Officers. In his spare time, Kuensting enjoys fishing, hunting, golfing and cooking/grilling for his family.

As the mental health department's director of reimbursement, Kuensting said he regularly worked with public administrator offices across the state. In the role, Kuensting was responsible for generating revenue for individuals with mental illness and developmental disabilities.

"If I get elected, I should be able to hit the ground running with not much learning curve," Kuensting said.

He also toured the department's mental health facilities and met with nearly every contracted provider. During visits, Kuensting said, he would take time to speak with clients.

Kuensting said he promises to be accessible and to lend an ear.

"I know the clients have a lot of issues, but they all want to be treated with dignity and respect, and that's really a simple thing that doesn't cost any money," he said. "Just acknowledge them, be available for them and give them an opportunity."

In addition to assisting with mental, physical and housing needs, Kuensting said he would make the clients' financial stability a priority.

"I want to make their lives better than they are today, and I know I can do that," he said.

After working for the DMH, Kuensting said, he is in contact with many mental health professionals, like psychiatrists and psychologists, who he could turn to as public administrator if their expertise is needed.

Kuensting started his career in the Missouri Auditor's Office before going to the DMH.
