Winter workouts can be tough. With shorter days and cooler weather, it’s tempting to hibernate and stay bundled up under a blanket rather than voluntarily leave the house. But, after living through dozens of Missouri winters, I’ve learned that one of the best ways to beat the cold is to get out and about, and embrace all the season has to offer.

One of Jefferson City’s greatest gems is our ice arena. Situated in Washington Park off Missouri Boulevard, the rink is open to the public and even hosts Mizzou’s club hockey games. The facility offers a range of activities, including lessons, speedskating, broomball, hockey rec leagues and ice theatre.

I recently spent part of an afternoon there on a “skate date” with my fiance, Gavin. He just happens to be a former league hockey player who can still work the ice with the best of them, so I knew I could count on him for tips and support. See, I grew up watching “The Mighty Ducks” trilogy and tried to catch every figure skating event on TV during the winter olympics, but I’m far from an ice queen. In fact, before last month, I’d only been skating once. I was excited to give it another try. After renting skates (another great park amenity), I wobbled onto the rink.

I’ll admit it: my first few laps included a couple of falls. Each time, Gavin was there to help me up, and my determination to get better remained in tact. My goal was to make it two full laps around the rink with no stopping, no falling and no holding onto the rail. After some practice and kind coaching, I did it, smiling the whole time!

Open skate proved to be quite literally for everyone. During the hour I spent on the ice, I saw young girls working with a coach to hone their figure eights and jumps. Dads were there playing with their children; couples were holding hands while slowly circling the rink; and groups of friends were showing off tricks and sharing laughs. I worked up a sweat, but not once did I feel out of place. There was no pressure — just fun.

As I packed up from my winter workout, I realized the space is so much more than a fitness opportunity. It’s a community space where you can build muscle and memories, and I’ll definitely be back. Maybe I’ll see you there?
