BizBeat: Roofing business expands in Jefferson City

A roofing business founded in Taos has moved into a building that once housed a chemical plant on East McCarty Street in Jefferson City.

All Seasons Roofing provides commercial and industrial roofing services around the region. The company employs eight people, and owner Rachel Busche said she felt like the it is the right time to expand. To do that, the company needed a space much larger than its previous building in Taos.

Busche said the company's previous office was a small, cramped building. Roofing employees got most of their training on job sites while on top of roofs. The 10,500-square-foot space at 2601 E. McCarty St. gives the company room to set up a mock roof and train employees long before they enter the field.

"It was just a good fit for what we're looking for," Busche said.

The company spent four to five months renovating the building. Most of the old mortar in the aging brick building had to be replaced. Electrical and plumbing issues also were resolved.

Busche said All Seasons Roofing added offices, a bathroom and a conference room to the interior. Finishing touches are still being made.

For the past 20 years, the building served as a warehouse. Before that, it was the home of Isis Chemicals. On June 24, 1986, a large explosion at the factory rocked parts of eastern Jefferson City. The fire at 2:22 a.m. that day burned through an area which stored about 270 steel drums containing nitrocellulose, according to United Press International. Most of the 55-gallon drums were filled with material that's used in fingernail polish and coats products like paper plates and cups.
