Prep Baseball: Farmington (Minn.) 11, Capital City 9

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Capital City scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning, but the Cavaliers’ comeback came up just short Wednesday with an 11-9 loss to Farmington (Minn.).

The Cavaliers, playing their second game on their spring break trip, started their comeback when Shea Clark scored on a wild pitch, then Brock Miles hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Luke Skinner and cut Farmington’s lead to 11-5.

Blake Holtmeyer followed with an RBI triple, scoring Noah Nicklas, then Chase Lewis hit an RBI double to score Holtmeyer and make it a four-run game with one out in the seventh.

Evan Schaffer scored on a groundout by Chase Stieferman to empty the bases with one out to go. Peyton Locke hit a double and scored on a single by Zach Brown, bringing the tying run to the plate. But Farmington ended the game by getting the next batter to pop up in foul territory.

Farmington took an early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning and five more in the second.

Skinner hit a two-run single in the top of the second for the Cavaliers’ first runs. Schaffer scored on an error in the sixth to make the score 9-3.

Skinner went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Stieferman drove in a pair of run to lead the Capital City offense.

Brian Pace pitched the first two innings for the Cavaliers, allowing eight runs on nine hits with no walks and one strikeout. John Langston had three walks and two strikeouts in three innings of relief, while Locke had one strikeout and one walk in two innings on the mound.

Capital City (3-3) continues its spring break trip with a game against Collegiate (N.Y.) at 9:30 a.m. today.
