Cruise returns to downtown area

Whether you have a car you'd like to show off or you enjoy strolling down the lineup and admiring the cars, it's nearly time to head downtown for the Capitol Cruise In.

The first cruise of the year will be held from 5-9 p.m. Saturday.

Capitol Cruise In, formerly known as Cruisin' for MDA, was last held downtown in 2012 before it was canceled. After it was discontinued, some members moved to the Capital Mall parking lot to continue a version of the cruise.

Jim Strobel, one of the cruise organizers, said they wanted to bring it back to the downtown area. So it will be held on Capitol Avenue, from Jefferson Street to Adams Street.

"We're doing this to help out with the businesses downtown, help out with the local charities and to give everybody a chance to bring their cars out and enjoy the time," Strobel said.

Money raised from T-shirt sales will be donated to local charities three to four times a year.

"We try to get local businesses and local residents to decide who we need to give the money to," Strobel said.

A cruise at the mall will also be held Saturday.

"This gives the opportunity for people to go out to the mall and then drive downtown and do the cruise. So it makes it better for the residents and the people around that's got the cars and for the businesses around," Strobel said.

The cruise is free and open to the public. Organizers are hoping to expand it throughout the year to include food trucks, according to Strobel.

Capitol Cruise In will be held the last Saturday of every month from March through September on Capitol Avenue.
