Boys Tennis: Helias places fifth in Alton (Ill.) Doubles Tournament

ALTON, Ill. -- The Helias Crusaders finished fifth out of 15 teams Saturday in the Alton Doubles Tournament to finish with a team trophy.

The Crusaders’ pairing of Brock Jennings and Kaleb Godwin finished third on Court No. 4 to grab the team’s best finish and individual honors.

Jennings and Godwin won their first two matches, beating Civic Memorial (Ill.) 6-3, 6-1 and Alton (Ill.) 6-3, 6-3. Jennings and Godwin lost 3-6, 3-6 to another Civic Memorial pairing before winning the third-place match 4-6, 6-4 (10-8 tiebreak) against De Smet.

Coen Loethen and Elliot Vollet finished fifth on Court No. 1 to finish with individual honors.

Loethen and Vollet started with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Rockton (Ill.) before losing 4-6, 2-6 against Teutopolis (Ill.) The pair then won 7-5, 7-6 (10-3 tiebreak) against Alton before losing 4-6, 4-6 against St. Anthony (Ill.).

Kendall Call and Alex Kampeter finished 1-2 on Court No. 3. Call and Kampeter beat University Academy (Ill.) 8-6 in a one-set match and lost 6-2, 3-6 (8-10 tiebreak) against Alton and 7-5, 2-6 (7-10 tiebreak) against Greenville (Ill.).

Matthew Liebsch and Eli Schmidt lost all three matches on Court No. 2. The pair dropped matches to O’Fallon (Ill.) (1-6, 3-6), University Academy (2-6, 4-6) and De Smet (2-6, 2-6).

Helias will be back in action Tuesday when it hosts the Helias Invitational at the Crusader Athletic Complex.
