Guinn, Lady Jays capture two wins in Jamboree

The Jefferson City Lady Jays and new head coach Tom Guinn haven't had a lot of time to get acquainted with each other quite yet.

But they got the soccer season off to a good start Tuesday night with a pair of Jamboree wins at the 179 Soccer Park.

"That was a couple of pretty good results, we didn't know what to expect," said Guinn, who stepped in after Eddie Horn resigned as head coach about a month ago. "The preseason isn't really that long in the spring, we've only had a couple of weeks of practice and with some of the girls, they've only had four or five practices."

Jefferson City opened with a 2-0 win against the Fatima Lady Comets. Tayler LePage recorded both of the goals for the Lady Jays.

"Those came on a couple of nice shots," said Guinn, who came from Springfield Catholic.

Against School of the Osage, Jefferson City had problems finding the back of the net early before posting a 6-0 victory.

The Lady Jays dominated control of the ball from the start against the Lady Indians, who had trouble getting the ball past midfield.

Jefferson City had a handful of corner kicks before getting on the board on a liner by Mackenzie Lochhead.

Halle Bohlken made it 2-0 about five minutes later. Then Jefferson City decided to give its back line some work handling the ball on the defensive end before working forward as LePage picked up her third goal of the night.

That score sent a majority of the starters to the bench.

Jefferson City then got goals from Brianne Campbell, Taylor Burkhead and Grace Haarmann to close out the scoring.

Megan Foster was in goal for Jefferson City.

"I have never seen these girls in competition before and I didn't really know what to expect," said Guinn, who joined the soccer coaching staff last fall with the boys program. "To watch them win convincingly was fun to watch."

Jefferson City opens the regular season Saturday at home against Ursuline Academy. The junior varsity game will start at 10:30 a.m., with the varsity to follow around 12:15 p.m.
