Bluegrass bands to play, promote Jefferson City music scene

A local musician is trying to enhance the Jefferson City music scene by bringing the community together through song.

Janice Martin, banjo player of the nationally recognized Bluegrass Martins, hopes to eventually create an organized, live concert series with an up-close-and-personal feel. Martin said she wants to preserve that concept of a concert while promoting music that people aren't aware of or don't have access.

"The dream is to do intimate concerts where you're one with the bands to where you can sit not very far from them, talk to them and socialize with them ... We're trying to create a show that is interactive and feeling like you're a part of it," she said.

Though the idea is in its infancy, she's testing it out with the bluegrass band she's a part of - which consists of her and her siblings.

The Bluegrass Martins will perform 7 p.m. on March 11 at Revel Catering and Events, 102 E. High St. The band is headlining along with The Special Consensus, a four-person acoustic bluegrass band. Admission is $20 per person, and children 10 and under enter free with an adult. Light appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages come with a ticket. Doors open at 6 p.m., and seating is limited.

"The goal is create a show or shows and let everybody know that Jefferson City can be and is a great place to listen to live music," Martin said. "We don't have that now."
