Moriarity, Martin lead Jays to Thrasher crown

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Logan Moriarity and Jalen Martin of the Jays claimed individual wrestling honors while Jefferson City captured the team title at the Kyle Thrasher Memorial Tournament that concluded Saturday.

Jefferson City topped the 27-team field with 230 points, one point better than Lafayette. Holt was third with 200.

"It was a terrific team effort to win the team title," Jays coach Phil Cagle said. "There were a lot of good teams in this tournament."

Moriarity took the title at 170 pounds, finishing with a 3-0 record. He won his quarterfinal and semifinal matches by first-period falls before taking a 4-0 decision against Jack Flynn of Francis Howell for the title.

Moriarity is now 34-2 on the season.

Martin remained undefeated on the season (35-0) in taking the crown at 195. Martin won his quarterfinal and semifinal matches by first-period falls before posting a 5-1 victory against Jack Heese of Francis Howell to earn the crown with a 3-0 record in the tournament.

Peter Kuster of the Jays finished second at 120 pounds. Kuster (34-3) dropped a 4-0 decision to Sidney Oliver of Holt in the title match to finish the tournament with a 3-1 record.

Christian Mayberry at 126 and Tanner Irwin at 132 both finished third.

Mayberry (30-7) was 4-1 in the tournament, including an 11-3 major decision against Jordan Carson of Lafayette in the third-place match.

Irwin (34-4) was 4-1 as well. He was a 4-0 winner against Alonso Hernandez of Pattonville in his third-place bout.

Taking fourth for Jefferson City were Zach Hurley at 138 (3-2 in the tournament), Jacob Brune at 160 (4-2 in the tournament) and Mekhi Burnley at 285 (4-2 in the tournament).

Gavin DeWitt at 145 and Rashaun Woods at 182 were both fifth, while Dennis Barnes finished sixth at 152.

"Everyone wrestled hard and gave it all they had," Cagle said.

It's the third tournament title for the Jays this season.

Jefferson City will look to wrap up its third consecutive undefeated campaign in regular-season duals Tuesday at Rock Bridge.
