Sprenger files for Blair Oaks board

WARDSVILLE, Mo. -- The election for the Blair Oaks School Board has become a three-person race after another candidate filed on Tuesday.

Taos resident Kimberley Sprenger is up against the two incumbent candidates for one of the two seats to be decided in the April.

Sprenger has two children in the Blair Oaks School District. She said she gave careful consideration before deciding she wanted to be part of the great work already being done by the board.

"I think I have a variety of talents that will be helpful and I'm willing to volunteer my time to make the schools the best they can be," Sprenger said. "I think it's good to have a variety of backgrounds (on the board)."

She has 26 years of experience working as a state employee, the last five years overseeing research and administrative services for the Department of Social Services.

Sprenger said her background with strategic planning, regulatory compliance, quality assurance, emergency management and fund development would aid her as one of the school board members.

In 2012, she was the recipient of the Truman Fellowship, which is awarded to public service professionals who have demonstrated excellence in their professions and dedication to creation public value for citizens.

While the Sprengers have lived in the school district for 10 years, her children recently started attending the district.

She is involved with the Home and School Association as an officer for elementary association and a member of the middle school association at the district.

Home and School are volunteer positions that help bridge the gap between parents and schools by fostering student activities and events.

Sprenger has been married to her husband, DeWayne, for 21 years and the couple have a daughter in eighth grade and a son in fourth grade.

She is up against the current president of the school board, Greg Russell, who has served on the board for 10 years, as well as John Weber, who has served on the board for six years.

Filing for school board positions closes at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
