Lincoln University will post 366 fun facts to its Facebook and Twitter accounts, one per day, throughout its sesquicentennial year.

The posts are among several projects planned to commemorate the founding of the university in Jefferson City by the 62nd and 65th U.S. Colored Infantry in 1866.

The year's theme is "Proud Past. Progressive Future."

Charter Day was observed Thursday, but activities for this 150th anniversary will begin the week of Feb. 8. The community is invited to all of the events, said university spokeswoman Misty Young.

Founder's Week will begin with a kick-off reception Feb. 8 on campus.

A new event will be LU Day at the Capitol, slated for Feb. 10. Officials and department representatives from the school will visit legislators to ensure new faces know what Lincoln has to offer, Young said.

The traditional Founder's Day ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Feb. 11. The Board of Curators will meet prior to the ceremony, and plans are being made to hold an observance at the gravesite of founder and long-time supporter W. Logan Bennett at the Jefferson City National Cemetery. For many early years, the university held the Founder's Day event there.

Activities will continue at least once a month, mostly coinciding with annual events.

Most alumni chapters hold events recognizing the founders in March. University leadership will travel to many of the chapters to join in this year's celebration, from Memphis to Los Angeles.

The annual President's Gala in April will be the "150th anniversary edition."

And, the commencement in May is expected to be big, Young said.

The Mid-Missouri Golf Tournament June 13 will be augmented with founder recognition, as will the National Alumni Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, in July.

In August, back-to-school activities and the Blue Tiger Athletics Casino Night will give nods to the school's origin.

Opening Convocation on Sept. 8 and Homecoming on Oct. 8 also will pay homage to the soldiers' dream.

The year's celebration will culminate Nov. 11 with a special Veterans Day event.

"We're founded by veterans; it's a fantastic way to go out with a bang on Veterans Day," Young said.

Alumni and current students are excited for this anniversary, she said.

"They know it was a struggle; this is a big deal to them," Young said.

Lincoln University is the only institution founded by veterans of the Civil War and the only one founded by African-American veterans of any conflict.

"They might not have seen a lot of action during the war, but they fought for another ideal just as important - education," Young said. "Today, we know we have another 150 years coming."
