Your Opinion: Proposed cigarette tax unfair

Dear Editor:

In an article published Dec. 28 the proposal to increase cigarette taxes for road improvements was suggested. Why isn't the public screaming discrimination? If a tax was suggested on only certain races, creeds or religious communities there would be an outcry of the masses.

This is the same thing, targeting a specific set of people. Smoking is still legal and every smoker out there knows it is not healthy, neither is fast food, booze, coffee, red meat, salt and millions of other things. If it was suggested to add an extra tax to your super-sized lunch at one of a dozen fast food places, to pay for the complications of obesity, it would never be considered.

This cigarette tax is not even to help people affected by smoking, it is for the upkeep of the state's roads ,something that all Missourians use. I believe the roads should be funded by every Missourian that uses the roads, not by a singled-out group because they partake in an unpopular practice.
