Jefferson City again to host bluegrass awards, convention

Jefferson City's Capitol Plaza Hotel again will be filled with bluegrass music this weekend, as the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America holds its 42nd annual music awards and the 33rd SPBGMA Mid-West Convention.

"The Midwest is a great location to hold such an event," Stephanie L. Jones of SPBGMA Events told the News Tribune. "A lot of history with the music is here, and the central location makes it a great meeting place for the bluegrass family to gather."

All of the events are open to the public.

Ticket sales will begin at noon Friday, and the Capitol Plaza Ballroom will open at 1 p.m.

The music begins at 2 p.m. Friday, ending with a 10 p.m. "Jam Session" with Rhonda Vincent in the hotel Atrium.

Friday's schedule also includes: Trinity River, 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.; Bluegrass Brigade, 2:45 p.m.; Moron Brothers, 3:15 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.; Collins Brothers, 6:45 p.m.; and Bull Harman & Bull's Eye, 7:15 p.m.

The music resumes at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, ending with the awards show at 7 p.m.

The rest of Saturday's schedule is: Trinity River, 12:30 p.m.; Collins Brothers, 1:15 p.m.; The Farm Hands, 2 p.m.; Punches Family, 3 p.m.; Bull Harman and Bull's Eye, 3:45 p.m.; Bluegrass Brigade, 4:15 p.m.; and the Bluegrass Martins, 4:45 p.m.

The awards generally have four finalists in each of 16 categories, including Promoter, Songwriter and Album of the year; Bass Fiddle, Dobro, Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo and Fiddle performers of the year; Female and Male vocalists of the year; Bluegrass Gospel, Vocal and Instrumental groups of the year; Band of the year and Entertainer(s) in Bluegrass Music.

Saturday night's awards program schedule is: Collins Brothers, followed at about 7:25 p.m. with the awards for Promoter, Songwriter and Album of the Year.

Then the Punches Family will perform, followed with the awards for Bass Fiddle, Dobro, Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo and Fiddle performers of the year.

The Bluegrass Martins will perform about 8:20 p.m. followed by the awards for Female and Male vocalists and the Bluegrass Gospel, Vocal and Instrumental groups of the year, the Bluegrass Band of the year and the Entertainer(s) in Bluegrass Music.

The program ends with the Farm Hands performing about 9:10 p.m.
