Your Opinion: Rebuttal to editorial on Legislature's role

Dear Editor:

I certainly disagree with your newspaper's opinion piece in the Feb. 25 edition about leaving control of the University of Missouri totally up to the curators and the previous/present administration. The university obviously has leadership problems and many alumni like myself have become aware of this.

The recent handling of the turmoil on campus is just one example. Students don't run the university. Adult leaders do. How do the taxpayers have a say in the sometimes wasteful spending and poor leadership at the university if not through oversight by the Legislature?

I would like to keep politics out of everything but it is simply impossible. Like many others, I have dropped my alumni association membership and am not buying my annual football season tickets in protest. I think what the football team and Coach Pinkel did was outrageous. And we are spending thousands of tax dollars to pay for a mob-leading professor to teach students about "Fifty Shades of Gray!"

Your editorial said the oversight action by the Legislature is "neither welcomed nor needed." Please do a little more editorial research before you make a statement like that. The university has embarrassed all Missourians and needs a change in leadership and direction.

Keep Planned Parenthood out of the university's business. Don't let a mob break up a homecoming parade and let a professor curse at police and threaten a student journalist. Tell football players and coaches if they don't want to play, then drop their full-boat scholarships and coaches' exorbitant salaries. Don't give golden parachutes to quitting or fired administrators/employees and resume a strong leadership of integrity at a once-esteemed university.

We all - and the Legislature - will let the curators do their jobs if they just do what is right and expected of professionals.
