Unattended stove leads to Jefferson City structure fire

A stove left unattended led to a Thursday morning structure fire in Jefferson City.

According to Jefferson City Fire Department reports, fire crews were called out at 8:15 a.m. to a structure fire at 2116 Louis Circle.

Fire crews got on the scene within three minutes and found a single-story brick apartment duplex with light smoke showing from the front door of one of the apartments.

An adult and four children who lived in the duplex had evacuated before firefighters arrived on the scene.

The adult attempted to extinguish the fire before the fire department arrived.

Firefighters found minor fire and smoldering material on and around the stove that had to be put out.

The kitchen suffered serious damage along with the dining area and there was moderate smoke damage throughout the rest of the apartment.

The Red Cross was contacted to assist the residents with housing.

Fire companies remained on the scene for approximately an hour and a half conducting overhaul operations.
