Hughes makes it official, signs with Missouri basketball

Frankie Hughes is officially on board. The three-star Cleveland shooting guard signed his financial aid agreement forms Wednesday to put his commitment to Missouri to ink, the school said.

“Bringing someone with Frankie’s ability and attitude into our program is very exciting,” Missouri head coach Kim Anderson said in a release. “He comes from an outstanding program at Garfield Heights where he competed and won on the biggest stage in the state of Ohio. We feel Frankie’s skillset can make an impact with our program. Most of all, he comes from a great family and is a young man who I think Mizzou fans will enjoy getting to know.”

Hughes tweeted his commitment Sunday after visiting Missouri two days before. Hughes, listed by Missouri as 6-foot-4 and 185-pounds, joins fellow Garfield Heights product Willie Jackson in Missouri’s freshman class. Jackson, a 6-foot-6 forward, committed to Missouri in September. The class also comprises 6-foot-9 forwards Reed Nikko of Maple Grove, Minn., and Mitchell Smith of Van Buren, Ark.

“Everybody is on the same page for Mizzou,” Hughes said in the statement. “It’s exciting to know the program really is a family. I feel like the coaching staff and players all really know each other and have great relationships. That stood out to me.

“I know I’ll bring a lot of energy, both of as a student, athlete and Columbia resident. I can’t wait to get on campus and have a lot of interaction with everyone. I’m a people person. I think Mizzou fans will see that I won’t give up on any play. If it’s a loose ball, I’m diving. At this level, you have to understand that every play counts.”

Hughes initially committed to Louisville but asked for his release in March.

The Tigers still have two open scholarships for the upcoming season. Missouri has to forfeit one scholarship over the course of the next two seasons as a self-imposed sanction.
