Your Opinion: Shameful decision

Dear Editor:

Shame on the City Council of Jefferson City for approving the so-called Hayselton projects. Shame for not digging deeper into the issues. Shame for not noticing our low morale City Hall staff relied on out-of-date documents and outside influences. Shame for allowing good citizens to be ignored and then mocked in open chambers.

Shame for not objecting when grumpy old man and outgoing Third Ward Councilman Bob Scrivner derisively asked about the dangerous hairpin turn entrance site: "is it dangerous just because it looks dangerous?" When, not "if', the first construction-related injury occurs, Scrivner will understand the stupidity of his question. Sure it looks dangerous, but, what the heck. Shame on our mayor for not postponing this matter until intelligent, reasonable and fair debate could be held.

There is, unfortunately, a wealth of shame to go around.

Shame on Dick Otke. Otke is not a land developer. He does not build anything. Rather, he is a land speculator, a gambler driven by greed, and less than happy when troublesome townsfolk get in his way. Golly, too bad the Main Street access is so expensive. A safe entrance would eat into your profits we suppose. Of course, Mr. Otke, a safe access could make selling your imaginary lots easier. Particularly to potential buyers who also may think the entrance looks dangerous, and may wonder why the neighbors seem so unfriendly.

Shame on Mike Bates, who advises city planners, Ameren UE, Otke, and will survey any land until it fits his client's desires. Mr. Bates, an apparent conflict of interest is still a conflict.

Shame on city employees who signed off on this catastrophe just to acquire free land for a pumping station, instead of preserving a quiet neighborhood, the woods, which will be torn down, and the land and the creek, which will be polluted. Very simply, you ignored your civic duty. Get your wheelbarrows ready when the EPA and the Conservation Commission visit. Mike Bates will help.

Pandora's Box is now open, and that is a shame for us all. Heavy construction vehicles come from East and West, passing schoolchildren, dog walkers, and mothers pushing baby strollers as they jog. Demand a safe city, shamelessly.
