Helias, Fatima split decisions in Invitational

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Helias Crusaders and Fatima Comets both finished 1-1 in action Friday in the North Pool of the Capital City Invitational played at Hickman.

Helias opened with a 9-3 loss to Eureka.

Helias took the lead with a run in the top of the first before Eureka answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame.

The Wildcats then posted five runs in the fifth. The Crusaders closed the scoring with single runs in the sixth and seventh.

Five Crusaders had one hit each in the game. Nolan Sachse, Parker Schnieders and Ryan Graessle scored runs for Helias. Matthew Dampf, Ryan Gartner and Alex Werner drove in runs.

Josiah Imhoff took the loss for Helias, pitching the first 42/3 innings. He allowed nine runs (five earned) on 10 hits and a walk while striking out one. Cole Johnson pitched the final 11/3 frames, allowing two hits and recording a strikeout.

The Crusaders bounced back with a 4-1 victory against the Fatima Comets.

Helias scored in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Both teams scored in the second before the Crusaders closed the scoring with two runs in the fifth.

Sachse had two hits for Helias. Landon Harrison, Dampf, Schnieders and Werner scored a run each. Alex Faddoul, Dampf, Gartner and Werner drove in runs.

Drew Boessen went the distance to get the win, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out two.

Logan Bexten had two hits for Fatima. Drew Bax had the RBI for the Comets, bringing home Brady Weavers.

Skyler Dickneite took the loss for Fatima, allowing two runs on one hit and four walks in 12/3 innings. He struck out one. Bexten pitched the final 41/3 innings, allowing two unearned runs on a hit and a walk while recording two strikeouts.

Helias (5-4) will play Hickman at 11:30 a.m. today to close pool play. The trophy games will follow.

Helias would advance to the title game with a win agianst Hickman and a Fatima win against Eureka.

Fatima started play with a 6-0 victory against Hickman.

The Comets scored two runs in the first, third and fourth innings against the Kewpies.

Steven Brandt, Will Robertson, Johnathon Backes and Bax had two hits each in a 10-hit Fatima attack.

Robertson scored twice, while Backes drove in three runs.

Josh Holtschnieder went the distance in the shutout. He pitched a nine-hitter, giving up no walks while striking out three.

Fatima (5-5) will wrap up pool play at 9 a.m. today against Eureka. The trophy games will follow.

Fatima would advance to the title game with a win against Eureka and a Hickman win against Helias.

Hickman and Eureka are also 1-1 in the pool after Friday's action.
