Wednesday's MLB Capsules

Games played on April 6, 2016

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Japanese pitcher Kenta Maeda homered in the second at-bat of his major league debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night and beat the Padres 7-0, making San Diego the first team in major league history to be shut out in its first three games.

The Padres were outscored 25-0 in the opening series against the Dodgers. They set the MLB mark with 27 straight scoreless innings to open a season. The old mark was 26 by the 1943 St. Louis Browns, according to STATS.

With one out in the fourth, Maeda drove an 0-2 pitch from Andrew Cashner (0-1) into the seats in left field.

Maeda (1-0) waved to the crowd as he rounded third base and then got the silent treatment in the dugout from his teammates, who then mobbed him.

YANKEES 16, ASTROS 6

NEW YORK (AP) - Starlin Castro homered and drove in five runs, Mark Teixeira had four RBIs and New York trounced Houston for its first victory of the season.

Teixeira and Castro each hit a three-run homer. Carlos Beltran also went deep and Castro finished with four of the 17 hits for the Yankees, who chased Collin McHugh (0-1) in a six-run first inning that lasted 36 minutes.

Michael Pineda (1-0) benefited from the offensive outburst, taking home a win despite allowing six runs and eight hits in five innings.

Carlos Correa went 4 for 5 with two home runs and George Springer had his first career grand slam for Houston, a 5-3 winner Tuesday in the frigid opener (36 degrees at game time). This one started with the temperature at 43 degrees and took 3 hours, 45 minutes to complete.

New York's bats were hot all night, though.

ATHLETICS 2, WHITE SOX 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Sonny Gray pitched seven strong innings, Mark Canha homered and Oakland got its first win of the season.

Gray, scratched from the opening-day start because of a stomach flu, gave up a run on three hits, walking four and striking out five.

John Axford pitched a scoreless eighth and Ryan Madsen got the final three outs for his first save. Madsen's last four saves have come against the White Sox.

Chicago starter Carlos Rodon gave up two runs on seven hits over seven innings. He walked one and stuck out six.

Jed Lowrie also had an RBI for the A's and Jimmy Rollins drove in a run for Chicago.

Adam Eaton singled twice and walked, reaching base safely in 25 consecutive games dating to last Sept. 9.

PIRATES 5, CARDINALS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Juan Nicasio pitched six dominant innings in his Pittsburgh debut and Francisco Cevelli hit a two-run double as the Pirates completed a three-game sweep.

Nicasio gave up one run and two hits while striking out seven and walking none. Signed to a $3 million, one-year contract as a free agent in the offseason, Nicasio pitched 15 scoreless innings during spring training with 24 strikeouts.

Cervell's two-run double capped a three-run fourth inning that pushed the Pirates' lead to 4-0 and ended the Cardinals debut of Mike Leake (0-1), who signed an $80 million, five-year contract. He allowed four runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Mark Melancon retired the only batter he faced for his first save, getting Kolten Wong to hit into a forceout with runners on first and second.

ORIOLES 4, TWINS 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Chris Davis homered to back an effective pitching performance by Yovani Gallardo in his Orioles debut.

Davis, the reigning major league home run champ, hit a solo shot to deep center off Kyle Gibson (0-1) in the third inning to put the Orioles ahead for good. Davis also scored the winning run in the season opener and is off to a strong start after receiving a $161 million, seven-year contract in January.

Gallardo (1-0) allowed one run and two hits in five innings, striking out four and walking three. The right-hander signed a $22 million, two-year contract in February after pitching for Texas last season.

Zach Britton, the last of four Baltimore relievers, struck out the side in the ninth for his first save.

NATIONALS 3, BRAVES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Pinch-hitter Matt den Dekker, recalled from the minors earlier in the day, had a tiebreaking, two-run double in a three-run seventh inning to help Washington complete an opening two-game sweep.

Stephen Strasburg (1-0), starting his final season with the Nationals before becoming eligible for free agency, allowed one run and six hits in six innings.

Jonathan Papelbon gave up one-out singles to Adonis Garcia, who had three hits, and Nick Markakis in the ninth. With Garcia at third and pinch-runner Drew Stubbs on second with two outs, Papelbon struck out A.J. Pierzynski for his second save.

Bud Norris (0-1), making his Atlanta debut after signing as a free agent, gave up three runs and six hits in seven innings.

ROCKIES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3

PHOENIX (AP) - Rookie Trevor Story made baseball history by hitting a home run in each of his first three major league games and Colorado beat Arizona.

Story also is the first player in baseball history to hit a home run for each of his first four hits.

Colorado's Tyler Chatwood (1-0) pitched a strong 6 1-3 innings in his first big-league appearance since recovering from a second Tommy John surgery.

Story's two-run homer off Patrick Corbin in the first inning gave him four for the season. DJ LeMahieu and Ryan Raburn also homered for the Rockies, who hit 10 home runs in the series, nine of them against Arizona starters. The Rockies took two of three from the Diamondbacks.

INDIANS 7, RED SOX 6

CLEVELAND (AP) - Mike Napoli homered against his former Boston teammates and Cleveland overcame David Ortiz's second homer in his farewell season.

Napoli broke a 6-all tie in the seventh with his solo shot off Junichi Tazawa (0-1). Napoli, signed as a free agent in November to give the Indians' lineup some pop, spent 2 1/2 seasons with Boston and helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 2013. Batting just .207, they traded him to Texas in August.

Napoli's homer made a winner of reliever Zach McAllister. Cody Allen worked the ninth, retiring Ortiz on drive to left for the final out of Cleveland's first win.

Ortiz's 505th career homer moved him past Eddie Murray into 26th place on the career list and triggered a four-run sixth for the Red Sox, who overcame 4-0 and 5-2 deficits.

REDS 3, PHILLIES 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Scott Schebler doubled with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning as Cincinnati took advantage of another meltdown by Philadelphia's bullpen.

Philadelphia wasted a lead in the eighth inning of a 6-2 defeat on opening day. Ahead all the way until the ninth, the Phillies let another one get away.

Trying to hold a 2-1 lead, Dalier Hinojosa (0-1) gave up three singles that loaded the bases with one out. Schebler, acquired from the Dodgers in the three-team deal that sent Todd Frazier to the White Sox in the offseason, doubled to left-center to complete the rally.

Blake Wood (1-0) pitched one inning for the win, the Reds' seventh straight over the Phillies at Great American Ball Park. Cincinnati has won 10 of its last 11 against Philadelphia there.

TIGERS 7, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered and drove in four runs and Francisco Rodriguez struck out Giancarlo Stanton to end the game with the bases loaded as Detroit handed Miami ace Jose Fernandez his first loss in 27 career starts at home.

Victor Martinez hit a two-run homer and Nick Castellanos had an RBI double in the sixth that chased Fernandez (0-1), who allowed five runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings with one walk and 13 strikeouts, one shy of his big league high. Fernandez had been 17-0 with a 1.40 ERA at Marlins Park, the most consecutive home wins to start a career in major league history.

Anibal Sanchez (1-0) allowed two runs and four hits in five innings for Detroit, which completed an opening two-game sweep.

MARINERS 9, RANGERS 5

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Robinson Cano homered twice and drove in five runs, including a two-run homer that capped Seattle's five-run ninth, as the Mariners rallied to beat Texas.

Rangers closer Shawn Tolleson (0-1) allowed all five batters he faced to reach base and score.

Pinch-hitter Nori Aoki and No. 9 batter Ketel Marte started the ninth with consecutive singles, and Leonys Martin had a tying RBI double. Kyle Seager then had a two-run single before Cano's fourth homer chased Tolleson.

Cano has homered in all three games for Seattle and is the first Mariners player ever with four homers in the first three games of the season. He had 21 homers last season, and his fourth didn't come until his 71st game on June 26.

Joaquin Benoit (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth.

BREWERS 4, GIANTS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Chris Carter hit his first home run for Milwaukee, then had a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.

Jeff Samardzija, making his Giants debut after signing a $90 million, five-year contract, allowed three runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings, falling to 0-5 in 10 career starts against Milwaukee.

Carter's third-inning home run was his fourth off Samardzija. He left Houston to sign with the Brewers after hitting 90 homers during three years with the Astros.

With the score 3-all, Javier Lopez (0-1) walked Scooter Gennett leading off the seventh. Ryan Braun's single off Cory Gearrin and Buster Posey's passed ball advanced the runners, and Carter's fly to center helped the Brewers beat the Giants for the second time in their last 12 meetings.

Tyler Thornburg (1-0) pitched a one-hit seventh, and Jeremy Jeffress threw a perfect ninth for his first save.

RAYS 5, BLUE JAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Steven Souza Jr.'s second home run of the game, a go-ahead, three-run drive in the eighth inning, lifted Tampa Bay over Toronto.

Souza pulled Tampa Bay to 3-2 in the sixth with a solo homer off J.A. Happ. Tampa Bay has homered in a team-record 18 consecutive games dating to Sept. 20.

Evan Longoria and Desmond Jennings singled off Gavin Floyd (0-1) in the eighth, and Arnold Leon relieved with one out. Souza homered to center for his fourth hit of the game, tying his career high.

Erasmo Ramirez (1-0) allowed one hit over the final two innings as the Rays split the four-game series after losing the first two.
