Your Opinion: With wealthy politicians, the rich get richer

Dear Editor:

All over the country Republican politicians are passing laws to inhibit minorities and other people from voting. They use the phony argument that to apply more stringent laws for people to follow will cut down on voting fraud. Many county clerks around the country have referred to these laws as a fix for a problem that doesn't exist.

Three times in the last three months I have been invited by Congressman Luetkemeyer's office to participate in a telephone town hall meeting. After listening to five or six callers ask Luetkemeyer their questions which demonstrated their ignorance and bigotry, I hung up the phone. To be fair, I did not spend more time listening to find out if I would hear one of his constituents ask about what he is going to do the help repair our crumbling infrastructure in this country.

The second time I was invited to his telephone town hall meeting. I listened in and again I heard five or six ignorant, bigoted Missourians ask simplistic questions around their issues of God, guns and gays. Donald Trump is not the only GOP candidate who doesn't take the time to correct, inform or educate voters about issues. Luetkemeyer did not ask what was the source of their misinformation but as best he could he thanked them for their questions and politely got them off the line.

The third time I was invited was a repeat of the first two. I think Republican candidates count on these people who do vote and who are so ill-informed as their base for their re-election. Perhaps Republicans could add another requirement for people to vote and that would be that they would be able to pass a grade school civics test before they are allowed to vote.

When you have millionaire politicians like Kehoe and Luetkemeyer elected to office who cast their votes for the needs and concerns of big corporations at the expense of the working poor, you get a wealthy country like ours where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. There is no liberal media. Most all of the radio, television and newspapers are owned by corporations. They make it a point to keep the public distracted from the real issues that need to be addressed in this country. I think Bernie Sanders is right, we need a revolution in this country.
