Your Opinion: On local control bill, follow the money

Dear Editor:

This week our esteemed Legislature considered overturning Gov. Nixon's veto of various legislation passed during the 2015 session.

Case in point: HB722. The origin of this bill was in the city of Columbia's passing an ordinance banning the use of plastic bags. A tidy ordinance. Local control.

Somehow, this ordinance regarding local control of plastic bags found its way to the state Legislature. Wow! Ban plastic bags? Why not ban a community's right to raise the minimum wage within its own city limits? Traditionally, the Republican party in this state has been a staunch and vocal supporter for local control in communities. Really?

Sorry! Not always! Case in point: the right of Missouri communities to set within their environs their own minimum wage.

Way, way back in the Nixon era, the whispered dictum to the two investigators was: "Follow the money, follow the money."

A half century later, the message still resounds; we can, and should, do no less - follow the money!
