Your Opinion: Disappointed by MU's decision

Dear Editor:

I am furious that University of Missouri Chancellor Loftin has severed ties between the university and Planned Parenthood. I had the courage to be the lone voice that testified Tuesday in favor of Planned Parenthood before the "Sanctity of Life" Committee; the least he could have done is to defend how the Planned Parenthood internships have enriched MU students. I have the privilege of knowing several fine young adults who benefited from that program, and they have gone into fields of study and careers that benefit the people of the region today.

The announcement of his decision to let the right-wing, ultra-conservative members of the Legislature intimidate him into doing less for the students, and consequently piling onto the effort that will undermine liberty for all the women of Missouri of childbearing age, came as a disappointing blow.

In my opinion, a person so easily controlled, out of touch and unwilling to extend himself to protect the learning opportunities to which the students have had access does not belong in the field of either university or hospital administration. This is a sad day for MU.
