Historic architect featured in home tour

The local works of historic architect Hurst John will be featured in the Historic City of Jefferson's 10th Annual Homes Tour 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

John was a prolific Mid-Missouri architect whose career spanned three decades, according to the HCJ August newsletter. His home designs focused on site, paying close attention to the most advantageous uses of natural lighting.

Other notable details of his work include a large, room-defining fireplace, logical room flow, stylized chimney and angled rooms. The windows are placed to create a vista from each room.

The homes tour is the historic preservation organization's main fundraiser, supporting activities including the Golden Hammer awards, educational sessions and an oral history collection project.

In addition to five homes designed by the prominent Mid-Missourian, his daughter and architect Martha John, Columbia, will discuss her father's work at 1 p.m. at the Capital Mall Community Room.

The presentation will be recorded and replayed until 4 p.m. Displays of the other Hurst John homes in Jefferson City will show photos and house plans.

A trolley will offer shuttle service among the two Country Club Drive homes at 3329 and 3420, 3434 Hobbs Lane and the Capital Mall.

The homes at 2611 E. Schellridge Drive and 2323 W. Main St. are accessible only by private vehicle.

Advanced tickets are $15 and available at The Art Bazaar, Schulte's Fresh Foods, Hy-Vee and Samuel's Tuxedos and Gifts.

Tickets will be available at the featured locations that day for $17.

Homes and trolley are not handicapped-accessible.
