Duster: Fall fashion is all about layering; and long, flowing sweaters will give this autumn a light, airy look. Chunky, knit sweaters covering just past the waist continue to offer a classy, comfortable option. Newer this year are the bolder, more statement-making dusters, which maintain a cardigan-esque shape but extend to ankle length or even floor length. Dusters are typically worn open; if it has buttons, they're probably for decoration more than function. Wear it over a plain tee or over a longer, bulkier shirt or sweater - either way, you'll want to pair it with leggings or skinny jeans to balance out the larger top.

Oversized top: As long as skinny jeans and leggings are the standard, you'll want several oversized tops in your closet to keep your outfits in proportion. Classic fall plaid is a go-to again this season, and it's available on more than your favorite comfy flannel shirt. Look for plaid on longer button-up tops that extend past the waist to pair perfectly with skinny jeans or jeggings. Chunky sweaters, whether they're pullovers or open cardigans, offer more warmth on crisp days and keep the same balance with a pair of leggings. If you want to wear an oversized top but worry what it might do to your figure, try shaping it with a strategically placed belt.

Skinny pants: The technical names may vary - skinny jeans, leggings, jeggings, ankle pants - but they all accomplish the same effect: a slim leg to counter the bulky tops of the cooler months. As dusters and long sweaters remain popular, slimmer pants will be essential.

"Because you have this volume, you can do a full top and then a skinny leg because the duster just kind of covers everything up," said Michelle Hataway of Saffees in Jefferson City. "But you need that skinny leg to balance it out."

Denim is a classic choice for casual days, so look for a comfortable pair of distressed skinny jeans. Leggings in black or other neutrals are a versatile option for pairing with any long or bulky top, but don't count out leggings sporting printed patterns or other embellishments that can add interest to your outfit. Jeggings offer the best of both with thicker fabric than leggings for added warmth, but more color options and a sleeker look than traditional jeans.

Ankle boots: While you might opt for classic, knee-length riding boots later in the season, a pliable pair of shorter ankle boots will get you through early autumn in style. As with taller boots, ankle boots work well with skinny jeans or leggings tucked in to the top. If you're wearing slightly shorter ankle pants to work, you can still opt for a dressy pair of ankle boots - don't worry about showing your heel; just make sure your socks aren't visible.

Fringed handbag: The fringe advice could really apply to any accessory this fall, as the 1970s-throwback adornment is making its way into more sections of the closet.

"It's on everything. It's on accessories; it's on jewelry," Hataway said. "Fringe, fringe, fringe, I would say."

If you're not up to a statement as bold as a completely fringe-lined vest or skirt - which you could find in stores this season, if you're interested - opt for fringe on staple accessories like handbags and scarves (and, not surprisingly, boots). There's no shortage of fringe on suede, leather and faux leather purses in hobo and crossbody styles.
