Helias football falls to 0-3

Bishop Althoff racked up more than 700 yards of offense Friday night in rolling to a 54-38 victory against Helias in a battle of Crusaders at Adkins Stadium.

Althoff ran for 347 yards, while throwing for another 366 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Helias falls to 0-3.

Three long touchdown runs by Althoff broke in the game, tied at 26 at the half, open in the third quarter.

Malik Easley had two of them, scoring from 47 and 61 yards. Those were sandwiched around a 46-yard gallop by Jaylon Bester as the Althoff took a 48-26 advantage into the final period.

Althoff got its final touchdown midway through the fourth quarter on a 15-yard pass from Jordan Augustine to Keenan Young.

Helias led 13-6 after one quarter. Alex Faddoul hooked up with Adam Bax on a 28-yard touchdown with 8:17 to go in the first quarter to give Helias its first lead of the season. Sam Heckart's PAT made it 7-0.

Althoff got on the board with 7:59 to go in the opening quarter on a 74-yard pass from Augustine to C.J. Coldon. The extra point attempt was blocked.

Helias regained the lead with 5:27 left in the period on a 7-yard run by Jake Burnett. The PAT was blocked and it was 13-6.

A 3-yard run by Augustine tied the game at 13 early in the quarter. Faddoul and Weston Porter connected from 45 yards to give Helias the lead back at 1913. But with 1:44 left, Bester took it over from a yard out to give Althoff a 20-19 lead. Then after a Helias punt, Augustine and Colden connected for a 50-yard score and it was 26-19.

But Helias got a quick answer as Jacob Storms returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown. Heckart's PAT tied it at 26.

Althoff pulled away with three unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter. Malik Easley scored on runs of 47 and 61 yards, sandwiched around a 46-yard gallop by Jaylon Bester and it was 48-26 after three quarters.

Augustine and Keenan Young connected from 15 yards out midway through the quarter to give Althoff a 54-26 lead. Helias scored twice in a :20-span late in the game on a 1-yard run by Faddoul and a 37-yard pass from Faddoul to Bax.

Easley finished with 204 yards on 16 carries, while Bester had 125 rushing yards on 16 attempts. Augustine was 18-of-23 through the air for 366 yards.

Helias totaled 339 yards of offense - 148 on the ground and 191 through the air.

Helias will host Hickman next Saturday. Game time is 7 p.m.
